Range Rover Evoque Safety Testing

Euro NCAP recently tested the 2012 Range Rover Evoque 2.2-liter diesel five-door and awarded the Evoque with a five-star overall safety rating (out of a five stars total). The Evoque also scored 86% in the adult occupant tests, 75% in child occupant tests, 41% in pedestrian safety tests, and 86% on the ‘safety assist’ portion of the review.

Adult Occupants – Euro NCAP tests adult occupants for frontal impact, side impact car, side impact pole, and rear impact whiplash. Ratings for each individual body section and test are rated in five steps from “Good” to “Poor.” The Evoque scored primarily in the “Good” and “Adequate” zones, with only two “Marginal” ratings. One “Marginal” rating was for the driver’s chest in frontal impact collisions and the other was for the rear impact whiplash test.

Child Occupants – Child occupant safety is based not only on the safety performance of the vehicle itself, but also on instructions and installation procedures. Two sets of tests are performed for child occupants; one test for an 18 month old child and another for a three-year old child. The Evoque scored maximum points for its performance in protecting the three-year old, but fell short in the instructional part of the test. Euro NCAP stated, “Poor information is provided in the car regarding the danger of using a rearward facing restraint in the passenger seat without first disabling the airbag.”

Pedestrians - The Evoque scored 41% in the pedestrian protection category, which is not out of line with the competition. The pedestrian safety ratings cover three steps from “Good” to “Adequate” to  ”Marginal.” The front edge of the hood scored no points and the rest of the hood was also a weak spot in the ratings. However, the bumper scored maximum points for leg protection. In comparison, the Chevrolet Volt scored 41%, the Jeep Grand Cherokee scored 45%, and the Volkswagen Beetle scored 53%.

Safety Assist – Finally, the Evoque scored safety assist points for its electronic stability control technology along with its driver, passenger, and rear seatbelt reminders. It failed to score any points for speed limitation assistance.
